RESET® Energy Projects

RESET Energy standardizes the continuous monitoring requirements of energy consumption in built environments.

Bring to the forefront the carbon operating costs of the built environment and leverage the faster feedback loops to improve.

1. Why do a RESET Energy Project?

Climate change is a critical topic and carbon is one of the most important parts of it. Energy consumption is the most direct way to understand a building's operational carbon and most buildings do not provide an automated way to track energy.

We propose the automated, continuous tracking of energy to better understand your building.

Continuous Commissioning

Leverage IoT technology to monitor data and track the energy consumption of a space. Once established, it can provide continuous commissioning for facility teams to easily maintain optimal performance.

Baselines and Improvement

Establish baselines to provide fast feedback on any energy efficiency initiatives to improve carbon emissions.

2. How RESET Energy Works

RESET Energy is designed to prioritize on-going results with a focus on the operational phase of the built environment. In the case of RESET Energy, energy consumption data is required to be continuously gathered through energy monitors that measure the following parameters:

  • Total Energy Consumption (kWh)
  • (Optional) Total Energy Generation (kWh)
  • (Optional) Total Gas Consumption (m3)
  • (Optional) Subset Energy Consumption (kWh)
  • (Optional) Subset Gas Consumption (m3)

RESET Energy employs a non-prescriptive approach for certification. Given the wide variety of space types occurring in the built environment and myriad ways occupants use these spaces, project teams must define and defend their calculation methodologies based on the individual project.

RESET can be applied to new or existing project typologies.

Below are summaries of the project accreditation requirements for the two project typologies:

Commercial Interiors (CI)

RESET Energy for Commercial Interiors targets a section of the interior space and is a typology tailored for tenants or a partial owner of an indoor space.

Core & Shell (CS)

RESET Energy for Core & Shell targets the entire building and is a typology tailored for landlords and developers.

By separating Commercial Interiors and Core & Shell, RESET Energy helps owners, operators, and tenants achieve healthy performance targets by clearly defining and communicating their respective roles and responsibilities.

At a Glance

RESET Energy for Commercial Interiors (CI) targets a section of the interior space and is a typology tailored for tenants or a partial owner of an indoor space.

Monitoring Requirements

  1. Minimum of connected continuous monitoring of total energy consumption.
  2. Additional score for sub-metering based on defined categories.
  3. Use of accredited hardware & software platforms.

Performance Requirements

RESET Energy uses the first year of data to set a baseline for the project. There are no hard requirements for performance. Instead, it is benchmarked against other RESET Energy projects.

Communication & Education

Performance results available to long-term project occupants on an ongoing basis.

3. Implementation and Considerations

Getting started with RESET Energy is very easy, low commitment, and low cost because it is only targeting data and continuous monitoring, not the solutions.

With the data, you will be able to find the best and most cost effective solution for your situation.

The list shows the basic steps of how to implement for RESET Energy.

  1. Select Project Typology
  2. Select and Source Data Provider and Monitors
  3. Plan and Define Monitor Installation Locations
  4. Network Solution & Set-Up
  5. Monitor Installation
  6. Connect to the Cloud
  7. RESET Energy Audit and Accreditation

4. Accreditation Process

The RESET Energy Standard establishes energy monitoring requirements, so simply leveraging the standard is a good way to get started. RESET also provides third-party project accreditation and certification services, so if a project wants to achieve certification status, it is possible to do so.

RESET Energy Audits

There are three parts to the RESET Energy Audits:

  1. RESET Energy Documentation Audit

A one-time paper audit to confirm that the implementation fulfills all of the RESET requirements.

  2. RESET Energy Site Audit

A one-time physical or virtual audit to confirm that the implementation is according to what was written in the Documentation Audit.

  3. RESET Energy Data Audit

A continuous data audit that verifies that the project is being continuously monitored and whether or not it is achieving performance targets.

For more details on certification, please check out RESET Energy Project Accreditation Process.

Project Accreditation Statuses

Projects that leverage the RESET Standard can be accredited or certified by RESET. Accreditation and statuses are applied to each of the RESET Standards separately per project.

  1. RESET Pre-Accredited

Awarded to projects, mainly in the design phase, that pass the documentation audits.

  2. RESET Accredited

Awarded to projects that are continuous monitoring according to the RESET Standard.

  3. RESET Certified (not available for Energy yet)

Awarded to projects that have achieved the performance requirements.
