In our continuing series titled, ‘Becoming a RESET Air AP’, RESET interviews pioneers from across the globe who have taken up the mission of creating healthier buildings. These individuals have not only decided to become RESET Air Accredited Professionals (AP’s) themselves but have integrated the RESET Air Certification Standards into their consulting portfolio, creating specialized, new business lines that they can offer to clients and partners.

Here’s what Shuchita Gupta, Head, Sustainable Solutions, Space Matrix, has to say.

What motivated you to become a RESET Air Accredited Professional?

With my current role as leader of Space Matrix’s global sustainability journey, it was only natural for me to upgrade to the first global, purely performance-based, building certification. Since RESET’s current focus is air quality; one of the most critical environmental concerns this decade has seen, I was motivated to find out how I could play my part in creating solutions.

Contemporary, “green” and healthy building rating frameworks, have grown quite gradually and organically in the past two decades. However, there has been a radical shift from solely quantifying tangible factors, such as waste, water, energy, etc, to quantifying the “intangibles”, such as health and productivity, for the larger benefit of the organization and its people.

RESET Air has set the right platform in that direction. I’m excited that our industry is now on the path towards quantifying and subsequently, ensuring, that built environments can be healthy and safe, starting with air.

What makes the RESET Air Standard different?

RESET Air has a very fresh approach. By being performance-based, through continuous data from sensors, the Standard allows users to identify potential issues in a project early on. Since its not prescriptive and mainly defines the target, it also gives much needed flexibility to designers and decision makers to choose the approach that best suits their projects to achieve desired results.

Lastly, due to its IT framework, RESET Air provides comparability of IAQ data for client sites, both at the global, as well as the local level. This then becomes a “glocal” benchmark for building owners and end-users alike.

Growing up, I was inspired by the phrase, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family)”. When we have systems, standards and frameworks in place that serve to unify rather than use biases or regional contexts to splinter us, will we be able to make this world a better one.
